Cigar Review: Primos Estate Selection Habano Criollo Rosado

This offering from Blanco Cigars features a Nicaraguan Habano Rosado wrapper over Honduran binder and Nicaraguan, Honduran and Peruvian long fillers.

This is what I will call a “price point” stick – it’s not super budget like the Primos Classic line but not as expensive as Blanco’s higher end offerings. This blend ranges from about $6.45-$7.20/stick** depending on vitola. The size reviewed here is a 7″ x 52RG Double Corona.

The first light revealed a perfect draw producing thick plumes of thick medium bodied smoke. Flavors consisted of a sweet cream and raisin on the draw with a hint of pepper and aromatic cedar on the retrohale.

Getting into the first third we see much more of the same but with an added note of nuts on the draw and a milk chocolate on the finish. Very complex yet smooth flavors holding at a medium body with everything blended together perfectly. Into the 2nd third we see a substantial transition with the nuts taking on more of a leather on the draw while retaining the other flavors. The last third sees a big shift with the leather really becoming the star of the show while the other flavors take a back seat. The smoke started going too warm for my taste at 1 hour 40 minutes for an excellent burn time while the nicotine strength came up to match the body at a medium.

As with every Blanco I’ve ever had this cigar exhibited flawless construction with a razor sharp burn line and an ash that holds on a third at a time. A small touch up was required at the start of the final third but I’ll attribute that to the elevated humidity level at the time I smoked this cigar for review.

This would make a great mid-day cigar – middle of the road in body and strength but still having a great deal of complexity. I would say it smokes above its price point so I’m giving it a very favorable rating: 4.5/5.

Pair with a nice cup of coffee, a Jamaican rum or a Pinot Noir for best results.
