Song Lyric Sunday 7/22/18 – The Name of the Game

Song Lyric Sunday is once again upon us, and our theme this week is “speak.” Well, I’ve had a particular band on my mind the past few days so songs by this band are all I could think of and I arrived at this one.

With the release of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again this week, ABBA has been front and center in my musical choices this week. No, I’ve not yet seen it but I hope to soon; I’ve just not found a lady friend to go see it with yet. A guy seeing a chick flick by himself? Yeah, that would look weird as hell. Luckily the bartender at my watering hole wants to see it and her husband has no interest so we’ll probably go see it together sometime this week.

Anyway, I digress. As ABBA is all I could think of this week and they’re probably my second favorite band behind TFF (weird I know, totally different style and totally different lyrical content!), I figured I’d make one of their songs fit and I think I did. Though the word “speak” never appears in the lyrics, the word “talk” does as does the phrase “the sound of your voice” so that’s close enough isn’t it? Well I hope so.

With that, here is the song “The Name of the Game” by ABBA (written by Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson):

I’ve seen you twice, in a short time
Only a week since we started
It seems to me, for every time
I’m getting more open-hearted

I was an impossible case
No-one ever could reach me
But I think I can see in your face
There’s a lot you can teach me
So I wanna know..

What’s the name of the game?
Does it mean anything to you?
What’s the name of the game?
Can you feel it the way I do?
Tell me please, ’cause I have to know
I’m a bashful child, beginning to grow

And you make me talk
And you make me feel
And you make me show
What I’m trying to conceal
If I trust in you, would you let me down?
Would you laugh at me, if I said I care for you?
Could you feel the same way too?
I wanna know..

The name of the game

I have no friends, no-one to see
And I am never invited
Now I am here, talking to you
No wonder I get excited

Your smile, and the sound of your voice
And the way you see through me
Got a feeling, you give me no choice
But it means a lot to me
So I wanna know..

What’s the name of the game?
(Your smile and the sound of your voice)
Does it mean anything to you?
(Got a feeling you give me no choice)
But it means a lot, what’s the name of the game?
(Your smile and the sound of your voice)
Can you feel it the way I do?
Tell me please, ’cause I have to know
I’m a bashful child, beginning to grow

And you make me talk
And you make me feel
And you make me show
What I’m trying to conceal
If I trust in you, would you let me down?
Would you laugh at me, if I said I care for you?
Could you feel the same way too?
I wanna know..
Oh yes I wanna know..

The name of the game
(I was an impossible case)
Does it mean anything to you?
(But I think I can see in your face)
That it means a lot
What’s the name of the game?
(Your smile and the sound of your voice)
Can you feel it the way I do?
(Got a feeling you give me no choice)
But it means a lot, what’s the name of the game?
(I was an impossible case)
Does it mean anything to you?
(But I think I can see in your face)
That it means a lot

  1. I love ABBA. ABBA saved me from losing my mind, growing up. Thank you, Lynn for sharing. My personal favourite is ‘Dancing Queen’ and pf course ‘Thank you for the music’. So looking forward to the movie! ❀
