Song Lyric Sunday 3/4/18 – One

So to follow up last week’s theme of letters, this week we’re exploring numbers for Song Lyric Sunday. Well OK, this one was much easier for me.

The first song that came to mind not only features a number in the title and lyrics, but also a number in the band’s name! I don’t think I need to say anything more about this other than to present you my selection for the week: “One (Is The Loneliest Number)” originally by Herry Nilsson but made famous by the band Three Dog Night.

The lyrics are in the video so I’ll not transcribe them here.

Now just for shits and giggles, I looked up the original version of the song having never heard it before myself (I in fact was unaware Three Dog Night’s version was a cover until I researched the songwriter!). Note some lyrical differences as well.

And that’s a wrap for this week. I just have this feeling my selection will be duplicated but oh well. I do like this song, even though I disagree with the premise of it (in my experience two was worse than one!).

  1. Catchy song, but I am partial to the version from the Magnolia soundtrack. Sad one, but being with someone else isn’t always preferable, two better than one, if two together are miserable. This one and its instruments isn’t too bad of a version also. Good choice.

    • It is crazy. A song becomes so associated with a certain group that it can be jarring to find out it’s a cover. Case in point two other songs I’ve featured – “Obsession” and “Mad World” – most people (at least in the modern era) are unaware that Animotion and Gary Jules respectively covered those songs.

  2. Excellent choice! I didn’t know about the Nilsson connection at all! I’m still partial to 3 Dog Night’s version, because I did see them in concert a long time ago. They sure took the song to a whole other level, didn’t they! 🙂
