Song Lyric Sunday 2/18/18 – Wild Mountain Thyme

“Earth” is our theme for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday and though not directly about earth in and of itself, this song makes many references to elements of earth so I figured it was a solid choice.

I’ve been featuring several Scottish folk songs lately as the themes seem to fit and this one is no exception. Though the origin of this song is difficult to definitely nail down, it is often attributed to Francis McPeake though he probably borrowed some elements of other poems and songs. It was first published in 1957 but dates back much farther.

With that, here is the song “Wild Mountain Thyme” (AKA “Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?”). As with most traditional folk songs there are countless versions of the song, but I’m choosing my favorite version of the song as performed by the group The Silencers. As always, these songs are up to interpretation so the lyrics might vary slightly from version to version.

Oh, the summertime has coming
And the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme
Rolls around the purple heather
Will you go, lassie, go?

And we’ll all go together
To pluck wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will you go, lassie, go?

I will build my love a tower
Near yon clear crystal fountain
Aye, and on it I will pile
All the wild flowers of the mountain
Will you go, lassie, go?

And we’ll all go together
To pluck wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
(All around, all around)
Will you go, lassie, go?

If my true love (s)he was gone
I would surely find another
As the wild mountain thyme
Rolls around the purple heather
Will you go, lassie, go?

And we’ll all go together
To pluck wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will you go, lassie, go?

And we’ll all go together
To pluck wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will you go, lassie, go?

And we’ll all go together
To pluck wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
(All around, all around)
Will you go, lassie, go?

(Yes, we’ll go)
And we’ll all go together
To pluck wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
(All around, all around)
Will you go, lassie, go?
