Song Lyric Sunday 1/7/18 – Bad Dreams

So “madness” is our take for Song Lyric Sunday. Well, the obvious choice would have been (for me anyway) “Mad World” (as in the REAL “Mad World” – the TFF version) but I’ve already featured that so I needed to dig deeper (unless I were to pull what I did last week and do my own cover of my selection, but I just don’t have the time to do that kind of a production this week; thanks for all the positive feedback on that by the way – it was rather overwhelming).

So, madness. It seems to me life is just madness and nothing but a bad dream most of the time, so that led me to this song for this week. The song is called simply “Bad Dreams,” a song by a late 1970s/early 1980s band called Graduate – a little bit of an obscure band with some goofy-ass cringeworthy music. For those who missed the first time I featured a song by this band, the background: Graduate was the first band founded by childhood friends by the names of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Are those names familiar? Of course they are; after the dismal failure of Graduate, Roland and Curt went on to study primal scream theory and founded the band known as none other than Tears for Fears.  It’s kind of interesting to note their evolution.

Anyway, I digress. Here’s the song (written I assume by Roland Orzabal):

 it’s the same old story
each and everywhere i go
trying hard to be someone
to be someone that i don’t know

an almost normal reaction
would be simply to run and hide
yes but what would that tell you
of the hurts that lay deep inside

why can’t we live as one together (together)
why can’t we live as one forever and forever

bad dreams bad dreams
carry me up in clouds
carry me up in clouds
bad dreams bad dreams
carry me up in clouds
carry me up in clouds

it’s the same old story
one (that’s happened???) for many years
always struggling and fighting
it’s so hard to keep back the tears

life is just a bad dream
only hope that soon i’ll wake
put an end to these nightmares
it’s for mine and for heaven’s sake

why can’t we live as one together (together)
why can’t we live as one forever and forever

bad dreams bad dreams
carry me up in clouds
carry me up in clouds
bad dreams bad dreams
carry me up in clouds
carry me up in clouds

why can’t we live as one together (together)
why can’t we live as one forever and forever

bad dreams bad dreams
carry me up in clouds
carry me up in clouds
bad dreams bad dreams
carry me up in clouds
carry me up in clouds
bad dreams bad dreams
carry me up in clouds
carry me up in clouds
bad dreams bad dreams
carry me up in clouds
carry me up in clouds

it’s the same old story
each and everywhere i go
it’s the same old story
each and everywhere i go
it’s the same old story
each and everywhere i go
it’s the same old story
each and everywhere i go
it’s the same old story
each and everywhere i go
it’s the same old story
each and everywhere i go
it’s the same old story
each and everywhere i go
it’s the same old story
each and everywhere i go

Well that’s this week. I think it’s safe to say we’re all glad Roland and Curt evolved past this kind of thing and became the band they’re famous for. I don’t know, I find Graduate’s music comical almost. What do you think?
