Song Lyric Sunday 9/3/17 – Woman in Chains

I know, I’m late to the game this week again. Had another busy and crazy weekend here; finally getting to move my big stuff to my new place in Dallas thus completing this transitional phase of my life. As such, I’m late, I’m brain fried and what you get for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday theme is what you get. Deal with it.

Breath/breathing – something that’s essential for all life. We all need to breathe to live and until you are incapable of breathing (either literally or metaphorically) you seem to take this simple survival mechanism for granted. When I was trying to think of songs or lyrics that fit the theme, the only thing that came to mind was the lyric “I feel somebody somewhere is trying to breathe” (referring to a metaphorical suffocation). Though the song isn’t about breath or breathing in the literal sense, it’s more metaphorical.

So here’s where we’re at and my brain-dead default for this prompt – “Woman in Chains.” This is a duet (and I almost chose it for the duets theme) between a certain 1980s band from Bath, England that needs no mention here and Oleta Adams and written by the creative mind of the band whose initials are RO.

**Trigger warning: this is a very, very heavy song and this might be triggering to some who have experienced the gist of the lyrics. I know some of my readers have definitely gone through it. Proceed at your own risk.**

You better love loving and you better behave
You better love loving and you better behave
Woman in chains
Woman in chains

Calls her man “the great white hope”
Says she’s fine, she’ll always cope
Woman in chains
Woman in chains

Well I feel lying and waiting is a poor man’s deal (a poor man’s deal)
And I feel hopelessly weighed down by your eyes of steel (your eyes of steel)
Well, it’s a world gone crazy
Keeps woman in chains

Ooo-oo-ohh
Woman in Chains
Woman in Chains

Trades her soul as skin and bones (you better love loving and you better behave)
Sells the only thing she owns (you better love loving and you better behave)
Woman in Chains (the sun and the moon)
Woman in Chains

Men of Stone
Men of Stone

Well I feel deep in your heart there are wounds time can’t heal (that time can’t heal)
And I feel somebody somewhere is trying to breathe
Well you know what I mean

It’s a world gone crazy keeps Woman in chains
It’s under my skin but out of my hands
I’ll tear it apart but I won’t understand (somebody somewhere is trying to breathe)
I will not accept the greatness of man

It’s a world gone crazy
Keeps Woman in chains (Gone crazy keeps woman in chains)

So free her (repeat ad nauseam)
(The sun and the moon, the wind and the rain)

If you survived that, glad you stuck around. I know this one was heavy but it’s all I could think of.
