Song Lyric Sunday 8/27/17 – The Swimming Song

Our topic for Song Lyric Sunday this week is heat. Well, what better way to beat the heat than taking a dip? Even though I haven’t done so in years myself mainly due to body image issues (reference previous post) it’s still refreshing to do.

So here’s a song about cooling off with a refreshing dip. Written and performed by Loudon Wainwright III, this is a fun little ditty and one of my favorites to play at open mic nights and such.

Here then is “The Swimming Song.”

This summer I went swimming
This summer I might have drowned
But I held my breath and I kicked my feet
And I moved my arms around
Moved my arms around

This summer I swam in the ocean
And I swam in a swimming pool
Salt my wounds, chlorine my eyes
I’m a self-destructive fool
I’m a self-destructive fool

This summer I did the backstroke
And you know that that’s not all
I did the breaststroke and the butterfly
And the old Australian crawl
The old Australian crawl

This summer I swam in a public place
And a reservoir to boot
At the latter I was informal
At the former I wore my suit
I wore my swimming suit, yeah

This summer I did swan dives
And jackknives for you all
And once when you weren’t looking
I did a cannonball
Did a cannonball

This summer I went swimming
This summer I might have drowned
But I held my breath and I kicked my feet
And I moved my arms around
Moved my arms around

  1. This is the first song so far today that I haven’t heard before. I really enjoyed it! I can’t think of anything better to beat the heat than s nice dip in a body of water. Great choice this week!

    • Loudon Wainwright III is one of those “hidden gems.” He never really made the limelight but he has so much great stuff. I actually have multiple of his songs in my set lists when I play open mic or similar venues.

And yes, swimming is so refreshing and I miss it. Oh well, maybe soon. Body image issues have kept me from swimming (I discussed that a bit in my post from yesterday) but maybe soon I’ll get to experience it again.

      • I feel the same way about swimming suits. I’m starting to wonder if it should even matter, though, you know? We are our own worst critics and perhaps we shouldn’t worry so much about what others think. The hardest part is getting past your own voice, though, so I get it.

I really enjoyed this song. I love discovering singers/bands that aren’t mainstream.

      • I agree. We are our own worst critics. I kind of touched on that. Someday soon I’ll get up the guts to go swimming and in a speedo to boot. Why not, right? πŸ˜‰

And yes, I always enjoy discovering new music too. Hidden gems tend to be great.
