Song Lyric Sunday 4/2/17 – Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Song Lyric Sunday arrives once again. So a song from the 80s, eh? Hah! That falls right into my wheelhouse. My favorite band is an 80s synthpop group. What did you think I was going to pick?

Well, how about one of their two signature songs? One of which I posted on the “anger” theme in August 2016, but I’ve yet to feature this one. Not to mention with President Donald Fucking Trump the state of our country right now fits this song, so that’s killing two birds with one stone.

Here then is “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears (written by Roland Orzabal, Ian Stanley and Chris Hughes).

Welcome to your life
There’s no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you

Acting on your best behaviour
Turn your back on mother nature
Everybody wants to rule the world

It’s my own design
It’s my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the most

Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

There’s a room where the light won’t find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do I’ll be right behind you

So glad we’ve almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world

I can’t stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world
Say that you’ll never never never never need it
One headline why believe it?
Everybody wants to rule the world

All for freedom and for pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

As an added note, there is a possibility I will be seeing Tears for Fears live this year! If the cards work out for me I’ll be dropping into their Dallas concert. Hopefully things work out the way I want.

  1. That’s exciting. I loved seeing them live in Detroit. Would love to see them again. I thought of Tears For Fears when I read about the eighties theme too. I think of Trump when I hear this song now too. I wonder if they could have guessed, when they wrote it, how apt it would be now for the maniac in the White House.

  2. If you’re not careful, you’re going to turn me into a Tears for Fears fan! This one is such a classic, I would have sworn you had already posted it. 🙂 I hope you make it to see them. It’s always exciting to see your favorite band live in concert. Keep us updated!

    • Well, I do try to stick to the theme and this particular song didn’t readily fit a prior theme in my experience. Otherwise I probably would have. Interesting tidbit: the song was originally titled “Everybody Wants to Go to War.” Just doesn’t have the same ring.

And yes, I’ll keep you updated. If I get the chance I’m totally going.
