Song Lyric Sunday 12/11/16 – Personal Jesus

This week’s Song Lyric Sunday theme is maybe the most difficult for me yet. As a total introvert and a very independent person the notion of needing someone is somewhat foreign to me so I thought for several hours and came up with absolutely bupkis. Then this song came on my stream and I’m like “perfect!”

So the song I’m choosing for this theme is “Personal Jesus” by Depeche Mode. I’ve always loved this song even though I’m not in the least bit religious. The bottom line is that we all need our own Personal Jesus sometimes to hear our prayers, someone who cares, someone who’s there for us. It could be a family member, a best friend or even a phone psychic really. As such, this is probably a very twisted take on the prompt and maybe not at all what you had in mind Helen (sorry!) but in the workings of my crazy mind it fits.

Without further ado:

Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who’s there

Feeling unknown
And you’re all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I’ll make you a believer

Take second best
Put me to the test
Things on your chest
You need to confess
I will deliver
You know I’m a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who’s there

Feeling unknown
And you’re all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I’ll make you a believer
I will deliver
You know I’m a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal Jesus

Reach out and touch faith

As an added bonus I’m also including a couple of covers of this song, both of which I enjoy. The first is probably the widest known cover of the song, namely Marilyn Manson’s version.

Another cover version I really love, and it’s a huge departure from the original, is the late Johnny Cash’s take on the song. It takes on a whole different vibe in his version which might be why I find it attractive in its own right.

And that’s a wrap for this week. Hope you enjoyed.
